Comments for the Squad

// August 30th, 2008 // Comments Off // Humor

Over on TV Squad, we get a lot of comments. I’m not talking about those made on posts so much, but via the ‘Comments’, ‘Tips’ and — God forbid — ‘Corrections’ links at the top of ever page. The forms for Tips get processed and sent to the entire team to mull over, post about or just make fun of. As for any of the other links, they all go to ME. Just me.

Most of the messages we get through these forms are people asking — clearly to the wrong people — how to get on X show, that they want X celebrity to know how much they love them, or that they need to sign X up for X show so they can get back at them for X. This is endless entertainment for me and — when I send the choice ones to them — for the team as well.

Back several years ago, the now-late Adam Finley decided we’d had enough of the emails asking us how to contact so many X people and X shows that we had to make an FAQ page for visitors that told them, once and for all, that we had nothing to do with getting in touch with these people. Of course, that page page made no difference at all and only fueled their persistence.

Here’s a sample of one recent email we got from the form that I’ll share with you. Maybe I’ll make it a regular feature here — who knows This one from last week isn’t one of the better ones, but this woman is definitely in the wrong place to look for help from ‘This Old (and I mean OLD) House’ …

To whom it concerns;  I live in a old log home, dating back to Mid 1700′s, I have been working on this old house and it feels like I can’t get anywhere. I want to add on a addition to. I just am over whelmed with this house, My girlfriend and I are getting married next May 30, 2009. She gets frustrated with the house, and we are both not fighting but getting tired of trying to live normal. How can I get things back on track. I am very upset and don’t want to lose my house but to better it and be proud to live here again. Please help if you can and Please get back to me either way. Thank you for your time and take care.

I saw this posted on Gizmodo and thought it was cool enough to share here. Plus I won’t forget where it is if I have it here. I forget things a lot.

“I can walk like a penguin!”

If you’re from New England, or at least Massachusetts, and you’re a child of the ’80s, you’ve likely seen the commercials for the New England Aquarium. Oh, the wonders of what you could see and do at the aquarium: dolphin shows! seals! fish! penguins!

My boss’s son works at a nearby school for troubled teens. Recently he took the “good ones” on a little field trip to the aquarium. The story of what happened next, he says, is true.

Secret of the Secrets of the Alchemist Dar

// August 7th, 2008 // Comments Off // General, Ranting

Years ago I learned about a very cool children’s book / real treasure hunt called A Treasure’s Trove. Basically this guy hid clues on how to retrieve a bunch of very valuable jeweled bugs, scattered all over the country and hidden in holes in trees, within the pages of the book. By the time I bought the book, all but one of the insects was located and claimed. And if you think it was easy to locate and decipher the clues in this book, you’d be very mistaken. Still, it’s definitely worth picking it up and then reading the solutions. A cool kid’s book, too.

Anyway, a year or so later, a sequel to this book came out, called Secrets of the Alchemist Dar. This book was much more complex and was supposed to supply 100 valuable rings, hidden in a similar manner to the ATT book. I got this book as soon as it was released, and man was it complex.

Comic-Con chameleon

// August 1st, 2008 // Comments Off // General

I’ve been back from the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) for a while now, and I’ve got a few posts up on TV Squad about it. In short, it was crowded, busy and overwhelming. Would I do it again? The jury’s still out on that one.

What sucked about this trip was how thin my collegue Rich Keller and I were stretched at this thing. We didn’t really get to enjoy ourselves much and see the exhibition floor — something my nerdy side would have liked to have done more of. Rich and I are working on a battle plan for next year, but we’ve decided on one major point: if we don’t get at least 3-4 people to cover this thing next year, we shouldn’t bother going at all.
